Archil Talakvadze says US Department of State's human rights report is positive in general
The report of the US Department of State is positive in general and, if we compare it with the previous years’ reports, critical evaluations are reduced, “said Archil Talakvadze, the leader of the parliamentary majority, while commenting on the report published by the State Department yesterday.
“The US Department of State has published the Human Rights Report, which provides information about Georgia. Overall, the report is positive and if we compare it with previous years’ reports, critical assessments have been reduced, and special emphasis is made on the violations and the difficult situation in the occupied territories and we cannot control these territories – it remains the main challenge.
There is also a talk on the self-government elections where the report agrees with the assessments made by the international observation organizations sating the elections were competitive and full compliance with legislation. Of course, there are assessments in different directions, I would say that there is a diametrically better situation in prisons under our government, where there were very critical assessments of human rights in previous years.
As for other chapters, they refer to media freedom, police reforms and other reforms that are important in terms of human rights and are focused on mechanisms of control such is the Audit Office and the Public Defender’s Office,” MP Archil Talakvadze said.
The US Department of State published 2017 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices on April 20.
