Anti-Namakhvani demonstrators to block Enka vehicles in Rioni Gorge
Anti-Namakhvani HPP protesters plan to block access of Enka vehicles to the HPP site in Rioni Gorge, activist Varlam Goletiani announced on Monday.
“Our indispensable for kicking off the mediation process including halting work process in the gorge should be met. We will not allow the company to carry out the works,” Goletiani stressed.
For the record, the government offered the protesters thirteen alternative locations in the village of Namakhvani, but the opponents rebuff to relocate.
The police also removed metal barriers on the spot to de-escalate the situation following the first round of Namakhvani mediation held on June 15.
The protest against HPP construction has been underway for about eight months.
Turkish company Emka gained the right to develop, build, own and operate the Namakhvani Hydropower project in 2017.
