Ambassador to Denmark to Georgia Anne Toft Sørensen’s expressed concern over the detention of Zurab Japaride, leader of the Girchi-More Freeom party.
“Denmark expresses deep concern over the disproportionate measures taken against the Georgian opposition leader Zurab Japaridze, as well as the recent adoption of legislation aimed at restricting political opposition activity.
Denmark supports targeted measures & united EU action in response to Georgia’s democratic backsliding,” she wrote on the X Platform.
On May 22, Zurab Japaridze, one of the leaders of the Coalition for Change, had his bail conditions replaced with imprisonment as a preventive measure.
This decision was made by Judge Irakli Shvangiradze of Tbilisi City Court. Japaridze was detained directly in the courtroom during the hearing.
