Ambassador Herczyński: EU sees a need for integrity checks of top judges with participation of foreign experts
“A fully independent, fully professional judicial system is one of the fundaments of every democracy. That is why for all enlargement countries, even for our member states, the European Commission puts judicial reform as one of the main priorities,” said EU Ambassador to Georgia Paweł Herczyński.
According to the Ambassador, the European Union put the judicial reform among the 9 steps outlined for Georgia. He noted that the EU sees a need for integrity checks of top judges and this should happen with the participation of foreign experts.
“This is also one of the 9 steps. And if you go back to the first-ever enlargement report that the European Commission drafted for Georgia last year, we see a need for integrity checks of top judges. This should happen with the participation of foreign experts. How to do it, what should be a process, what should be a way forward, this really needs to be discussed together with our Georgian counterparts.
We are ready to provide with our assistance and experience that we have already gained while working with other countries, that are on the enlargement path. Again, the aim is to have a fully professional and independent judicial system in order for Georgia to make a strong democracy,” he said.
