Members of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) parliamentary group have submitted questions to the German government concerning its support for non-governmental organisations in Georgia.

According to the information published on the Bundestag website, the AfD parliamentary group wishes to learn through a minor interpellation, which non-governmental organisations (NGOs) operating in Georgia have been supported directly or indirectly by the Federal Government since 2020.

The MPs also wish to know for what purpose and with what objective this support was provided, what sums were expended and which specific projects are involved.

The AfD also inquired which of the NGOs are aligned with the government and which with the opposition, as well as the extent of involvement of the German Embassy and the German Ambassador in these collaborations.

The Federal Government has commissioned the Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) GmbH to implement certain projects in various countries. GIZ is primarily active in Georgia on behalf of German ministries and the EU. Various projects are thereby supported. A focus of German-Georgian projects includes, amongst others, a project entitled “Good Governance.”

We ask the Federal Government:

  1. Which NGOs operating in Georgia are currently being supported by the Federal Government directly or indirectly through GIZ projects and, if applicable, by other means?
  2. Which NGOs operating in Georgia were supported by the Federal Government directly or indirectly through GIZ projects and, if applicable, by other means between 2020 and 2024?
  3. For what purpose and with what objective has support been or is support being provided to the NGOs in question (cf. preceding questions)?
  4. What sums have been or are being provided in support (please break down by year, cf. preceding questions)?
  5. Which specific GIZ projects and, if applicable, comparable support formats are currently being funded by the Federal Government in Georgia, particularly in the case of GIZ within the framework of the “Good Governance” project (cf. questioners’ preamble)?
  6. Are the German Embassy or the German Ambassador involved in the cooperation between GIZ and, if applicable, comparable support formats with NGOs operating in Georgia, and if so, in what manner?
  7. Which of the NGOs potentially supported directly or indirectly by the Federal Government are, to the Federal Government’s knowledge, close to the Georgian opposition?
  8. Which of the NGOs potentially supported directly or indirectly by the Federal Government are, to the Federal Government’s knowledge, close to the Georgian Government?
  9. Have certain media been or are certain media being supported in any way between 2020 and 2025 within the framework of projects funded by the Federal Government in Georgia, and if so, with what sums (please break down by year)?

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has submitted questions to the German federal government concerning the German Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer. Additionally, the German Foreign Ministry has recalled Fischer for consultations. According to the Foreign Ministry, it is necessary to clarify how the work will proceed moving forward.
