German Ambassador: Georgia is part of Europe, Georgia should join the European Union

“I want to wish Happy Europe Day to all the Georgian friends. We think Georgia is part of Europe. Georgia should join the European Union,” said Peter Fischer, German Ambassador to Georgia, on the occasion of Europe Day.

According to the German Ambassador, Europe is about friendship and solidarity, and everyone knows what has to be done to join the EU.

“Today is Europe Day, Schumann Day. It was the beginning of the development that led to the European Union. I want to wish Happy Europe Day to all the Georgian friends. We think Georgia is part of Europe. Georgia should join the European Union.

Europe is about friendship and solidarity, and we want to celebrate that today. Everyone knows what has to be done to join. So, I hope it will be done in the future. We can be together in one union. Because the European Union decided last June to put a hold on high-level contacts with the Georgian government unless it resolves the current crisis,” he said.

Responding to the question if the Georgian government wants to resolve the crisis, Peter Fischer said: “You have to ask the Georgian government what they intend to do.”

“I don’t know what the Georgian government will do. You have to ask the Georgian government what they intend to do. I hope that Georgia, as a country with all its citizens, can get back on track. It would be our hope, but it’s really up to Georgia. And what is Georgia? Georgia is the people of Georgia, and to join the European Union, it’s not just the government that joins. It’s not a parliament that joins. It’s not the business sector that joins. It’s everyone. So it’s a big effort, a national effort to join, and we offered candidacy. That’s the best we can do,” he said.
