Patriarchate believes that discussion on drug decriminalization should be suspended
The Georgian Patriarchate has released a statement in connection with the discussion of the daft-bill on decriminalization of consumption of light drugs in the parliament.
The Patriarchate declares that they believe that drug use is a grave sin, but the patriarchate has never supported the prosecution of drug users.
The statement provides recommendations on the timely resolution of problems, including the implementation of measures to protect the population, especially children from the harmful influence, preparation of state structures, the opening of special rehabilitation centers, the activity of the media, the introduction of special courses in different educational institutions, etc.
Patriarchate believes that proposed draft law does not include above-mentioned directions therefore discussion about the bill at the parliament should be temporarily suspended.
The Patriarchate considers it necessary to have broad public discussions on this topic with the participation of representatives of the authorities, the clergy, psychologists, human rights defenders, journalists, teachers, law enforcers, etc.
