Georgia's electoral system in line with EU practice to launch in 2024, GD's Kobakhidze says
Ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party Chairman Irakli Kobakhidze echoed today’s statement of US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan, saying “some don’t seem to understand that a democracy requires a plurality of views, one person, one party ruling, everything works against that. In fact, that risks the tyranny of the majority.”
Kobakhidze claims “two per cent and lower electoral thresholds are in effect in two EU member states, and no tyranny is formed there.”
He stressed that Georgia’s electoral system, “in line with the best European practice,” would come into effect in 2024.
“I’m telling you this as an expert as Kelly Degnan is not an expert herself. As for pluralism and diversity, it is ensured by the GD-tabled proportional electoral system, introduced for the first time in the history of Georgia. Most EU countries have a five per cent threshold with a proportional system. As for the opposition’s statements, we are ready to resume discussions on the Constitutional amendments, but this has its preconditions, all political parties should be present in the parliament,” Kobakhidze underscored.
