On the 8th day of the Tokyo Olympic Games, Anton Pliesnoi, the current European champion in the -96 kg weight category, won a bronze medal.

Pliesnoi lifted 177 kg in the snatch and 210 kg in the clean and jerk, combining a total of 387 kg.

The gold medal was won by Qatari Fares Ibrahim Elbakh, who lifted 402 kilograms and set a new Olympic record. Elbakh was followed by Venezuelan Keydomar Vallenilla, lifting a total of 387 kilograms.

This is the fifth medal Georgia won at the Tokyo Olympics. Four medals were claimed by Georgian judokas – Lasha Bekauri, Guram Tushishvili, Vazha Margvelashvili and Lasha Shavdatuashvili, and one belongs to the weightlifter Anton Plesnoi.
