We need national accord and unanimity as never before, Georgian President says

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili stressed, “all sides have to express together that we stand for the whole nation of Ukraine, its sovereignty and its territorial integrity, and that we stand for peace.”

Zourabichvili announced to sign a request from the Georgian Parliament to convene an extraordinary parliamentary session to express solidarity for Ukraine and support for its territorial integrity.

She also expressed readiness to represent Georgia “in all the formats where the issue of Ukraine is being discussed.”

“I think it is necessary, in any format for Parliament to hold an extraordinary session or an expanded Security Council to express all together that we stand for the whole nation of Ukraine, its sovereignty and territorial integrity and that we stand for peace. I have now been informed that an extraordinary parliamentary session request has been addressed to me and I am going to sign it.

For my part, I am ready to represent Georgia, as the Constitution allows me, in all the formats where the issue of Ukraine is being discussed, because the issue of Ukraine is an issue for all of us and it is necessary for the voice of Georgia to be heard there as well. We are and will always be on the side of the peaceful path, but also on the side of upholding principles and that is what our unity should be!” the President asserted.

In her recent address from the yard of the Presidential Palace, the President underscored the importance of national accord and unanimity, saying “today, as never before, for us and our future, we need national accord and unanimity. Strength is in unity!”

“Today is a tragic day for Ukraine. Although it did everything to maintain peace until the end, it could not avoid full-scale Russian aggression. Today, when it is trying to cope with this difficult situation, Georgia stands by its side. This day is also tragic for Georgia and all peace-loving democracies in Europe and the world. For war has broken in the heart of Europe despite all attempts at dialogue.

As the President of Georgia, the President of a country that has suffered similar aggression, I would like to express our full solidarity with the President, the Government, and the people of Ukraine. I would like to honour Ukrainian soldiers and citizens who have sacrificed today in defence of the sovereignty of their country. I must join the call for an immediate ceasefire by the UN Secretary General and all other leaders. I would like to address our people, the political spectrum, the majority and the opposition and the government, today, as never before, for us and for our future, we need national accord and unanimity. Strength is in unity!” Zourabichvili stated.

Earlier today, at 05:55 Moscow time, Russian President Vladimir Putin in a televised speech announced a “military operation” in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region.
