Volski: When we argued strategic assets shouldn’t be handed over to Russia or anyone else, UNM claimed ‘money doesn’t smell’

“We will do everything in our power to ensure that sanctions do not impact the Georgian population,” declared First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Gia Volski.

He emphasised that every measure will be taken to ensure the people experience no hardship.

“When we argued that strategic assets should not be handed over to Russia or anyone else without Georgia’s full participation in their management, UNM propaganda retorted that ‘money doesn’t smell’. Today, the global situation has changed. Consultations are currently underway with international partners, alongside expert meetings within government bodies. I am not hiding anything from you, but I cannot share further details just yet. What is certain is that we will do everything to protect the Georgian people from the impact of sanctions. Far more competent authorities will speak on the specific topics under discussion. I have already outlined the position broadly; I have nothing further to add. Everything will be done to prevent any hardship for our citizens,” stated Volski.

For context: As part of its 21st package of sanctions against Russia, the European Union imposed sanctions on Inter RAO UES. Inter RAO is the 100% indirect owner of Netherlands-registered Silk Road Holdings B.V. In turn, Silk Road Holdings holds a direct 75.108% stake in electricity supplier Telasi and a 75.471% stake in energy provider Telmico.
