US Treasury official warns Russia trying to bypass Western sanctions via Turkey

On August 19, US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo informed Turkish Deputy Finance Minister Yunus Elitas of Russian entities and individuals were attempting to use Turkey to bypass Western sanctions imposed over Russia’s war in Ukraine, the US Department of Treasury said on Saturday.

According to the Treasury’s readout, Deputy Secretary Adeyemo raised concerns that Russian entities and individuals are attempting to use Türkiye to evade sanctions put in place by the United States and 30 countries.

He reiterated the United States’ interest in the success of the Turkish economy and expressed the Treasury’s commitment to its partnership with the Government of Türkiye to protect the integrity of its banking sector, it continued.
