“We strongly urge a calm, peaceful environment for the political process to play out here,” US Ambassador Kelly Degnan said two days ahead of the October 2 local elections in Georgia.
The Ambassador said she was glad to see that Georgians wanted to go to the polls and vote. “I think Georgian voters need to see that each election show improvement. They deserve that. And it is a sign of their commitment to democratic progress. So, I hope that this is what we are going to see in the coming days,” Kelly Degnan said.
The US Ambassador noted that she was concerned about the reports of significant intimidation, harassment, and violence in the pre-election period.
“There is no place for hate speech that just divides an already polarized society,” Degnan stated and added that the US Embassy would closely watch the political process.
Georgia will hold the municipal elections on October 2.
