US Ambassador believes Public Defender's selection should be inclusive, transparent
US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan believes that the Public Defender is an important position and the selection process of the next Ombudsman should be inclusive and transparent to ensure the election of a qualified and courageous person who will be prepared to take on “tremendous responsibility mandated by the Constitution.”
“As we have seen from the outstanding work of Nino Lomjaria and her professional team of the Public Defender’s Office, this is a very important position. It is important because it is one of the few independent agencies that have the obligation under the Constitution to protect the human rights of every citizen of Georgia.
That is why the selection process needs to be inclusive, it has to be done in a transparent way to ensure that whoever the next Public Defender, is someone who is qualified, independent, courageous and prepared to take on this tremendous responsibility mandated by the Constitution to protect the human rights of every Georgian citizen,” she said.
