UNM's Tsitlidze: Note on local elections in EP resolution highlights falsehoods spread by Lelo (Gakharoids)

“The European Parliament has adopted a highly significant resolution on Georgia. Considering that Lelo (and Gakharoids), along with their handpicked experts, shamelessly lied by claiming that Europeans are urging us to participate in the elections, the note regarding local elections is particularly noteworthy,” writes Ani Tsitlidze, a member of the United National Movement, on social media.

Tsitlidze shared an excerpt from the European Parliament resolution concerning municipal elections.

“The municipal elections scheduled for autumn 2025 will unfold amidst a deteriorating legal environment, fueled by amendments to the Organic Law of Georgia and the Election Code adopted in December 2024, as well as ongoing political repression and increased persecution of opposition forces. Under these current political and legal conditions, municipal elections pose a serious challenge to any participant expecting free and fair voting.

Moreover, such participation may be exploited by the self-proclaimed government to legitimise the existing status quo. For the elections to genuinely reflect the democratic will of the Georgian people, imprisoned and detained opposition leaders must be released.

Additionally, elections must be held in an improved electoral environment, overseen by an independent and impartial election administration, and monitored by credible international observers, ensuring a process that is truly fair, free, and transparent.”
