UNM’s Pavlenishvili does not rule out that UNM will discuss remaining in Opposition Alliance at its congress

“A meeting of the Political Council will be held in the near future, to be followed by a party congress, with all of this expected to take place over the summer,” the Deputy Secretary General of the United National Movement, Irakli Pavlenishvili, has stated.

According to him, when the political climate has changed, the party’s work and structure must change too.

“The mood is straightforward: when the political system and the political climate have changed, we need to become more effective. When funding sources have been blocked off, political leaders are in prison, and repressive laws have been adopted over the past year or two, the party’s work and structure must change accordingly. That is precisely why we intend to carry out this course of reform,” Pavlenishvili said.

Pavlenishvili was also asked whether the party would discuss, in the format of the congress, the question of leaving the Opposition Alliance.

“We do not rule out that we might, among other things, discuss and debate this issue in the format of the congress. When we pointed out the lack of a proper working environment for cooperation, we were, unfortunately, the ones who bore the brunt of the attacks. It’s good that everyone now acknowledges this reality, and this is not to the credit of the United National Movement.

On the contrary, the United National Movement was constantly the object of attack. There was talk that the UNM was no longer taking part in meetings, and that if there was a problem, it lay with the United National Movement, meaning these meetings needed to become more functional. It turned out that the problem does not lie with the UNM, but with those actors who are permanently in a mode of attacking others,” Irakli Pavlenishvili stated.
