The United National Movement (UNM) opposition party members on Monday resigned after Levan Khabeishvili was elected as the new party chair.
Giorgi Kirtadze, the Chairman of UNM office in Adjara, Bacho Dolidze, UNM’s Organizational Secretary, Akaki Minashvili, UNM’s Political Secretary, and Giorgi Pataraia, Head of PR, left the posts, but claim they remain in the party.
Kirtadze said: “I will continue fighting to save [jailed ex-president] Misha’s life and change the autocratic regime.”
Dolidze explained: “We will not avoid accountability. I’m still in the party and continue fighting Georgian Dream. It’s unfortunate that the team I represented did not win, but this is the reality.”
Levan Khabeishvili beat the incumbent UNM Chair Nika Melia after winning 52.58% of the votes. Melia received 40% of the votes.
Four candidates, Nika Melia, Levan Khabeishvili, Giorgi Mumladze, and Nona Mamulashvili, run in the elections.
