UNM, Lelo announce parliamentary boycott

Levan Bezhashvili, a member of the United National Movement party announced that the faction, along with the majority of the opposition, is entering boycott mode and will not continue their activities as usual. According to him, the opposition will inform the public about plans later.

“Today, there is no legitimate government left in the country representing the people’s interests. People are protesting in the capital of Georgia against the adoption of the Russian law. In this regime, where the Russian regime has been established, normal parliamentary work is unthinkable. Today, we saw the parliamentary majority acting as an extension of the police in the parliamentary hall. Under these conditions, we, the National Movement faction and the majority of the opposition, will not continue our activities as usual and are entering boycott mode. We will soon present our final plan to the public alongside representatives of the parliamentary and non-parliamentary opposition,” said Bezhashvili.

The Lelo party also announced a boycott, citing that all red lines have been crossed and the country’s constitution openly violated in the legislative body. According to Lelo, the ruling Georgian Dream has left the political process, making a boycott the only legitimate way to oppose the regime.

Lelo asserts that defending the historical choice of the Georgian people and the country’s Euro-Atlantic integration course is crucial in the fight against Russia.

“We are not alone in this struggle; we are with the Georgian people and the Georgian opposition, who are victims of brutal retaliation by the Russian government. Today we witnessed open attacks in Parliament. Georgian Dream is violent everywhere: at rallies, in the streets, in homes, and in constitutional bodies. These are the last attempts of a regime doomed to failure. Lelo stands with the Georgian people. Therefore, today, when all red lines have been crossed and the constitution openly violated in the legislative body, Lelo has decided to boycott and no longer participate in parliamentary work.

Georgian Dream has been defeated in the parliament, has left the political process, violates the constitution, and represents the usurper Ivanishvili and Putin. Its only tool is violence. Lelo is entering boycott mode. Our path has always been to stand by the Georgian people. We defended this unity’s interests in parliament as long as it was possible and within logical limits. After today’s act of violence and treason – the Russian law – we believe there are no more resources to work in parliament, and a boycott is the only legitimate way to oppose the regime. Our fight will surely end in victory, as the past has never won against the future. The future of Georgia lies in NATO and the European Union,” stated Lelo.
