'UNM considers discriminatory campaign against Russian nationals as last resort to involve Georgia in military conflict,' GD Chair says
Georgian Dream (GD) party Chair, Irakli Kobakhidze, said the ruling team members would not attend today’s rally outside Parliament where Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to address seven countries, including Georgia, at 9 pm.
Kobakhidze explained that after Ukraine’s “completely illogical” step to recall its ambassador from Georgia, “government representatives can not be there.”
However, GD Chair pledged Georgia’s support for the Ukrainian people would be “unwavering.” “No political move will affect it.”
Asked about reports of Russian influx in Georgia, triggering worries among society, Kobakhidze accused the opposition United National Movement (UNM) party of starting a “campaign to introduce discriminatory restrictions for Russian nationals.”
He vowed the government would “fully address all potential risks” linked with a mass influx of foreign nationals.
“Georgia is open to any citizen of any country regardless of the ethnicity, and is accountable for ensuring non-discriminatory treatment towards them and protecting their safety,” he underscored.
Kobakhidze urged law enforcement bodies to adopt all measures to debar attempts of “physical confrontation or breeding ethnic feud.”
“It is obvious that the discriminatory campaign against Russian nationals is considered by the war party, the United National Movement as the last chance to involve Georgia in a military conflict, which the government will not allow,” he stated.
