UNM: Congressman Joe Wilson urges Syria to reverse recognition of Georgia's occupied regions
Following the meeting with the Chairperson of the United National Movement (UNM), Tina Bokuchava, and the party’s Secretary General, Petre Tsiskarishvili, U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson called on Syria to reverse the decision on recognition of Georgia’s occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions, the press service of the Unity-National Movement (UNM) party reported.
According to the UNM, the party leaders raised the issue at the meeting with Joe Wilson, who Chairs the Helsinki Commission and is the author of the MEGOBARI Act.
“At the meeting, the UNM leaders highlighted that the decision made by the Bashar al-Assad regime in 2018, undermines Georgi’s sovereignty and violates international law,” the UNM said.
The UNM said Congressman Joe Wilson made an open statement and urged Syria’s new government to reverse the decision.
“I was grateful to ask FM Shibani in February to reverse the Assad regime’s wrongful decision and have Syria recognize South Ossetia and Abkhazia as the sovereign territory of the country of Georgia. This simple step would show deep strength and commitment to Syria’s new path,” Joe Wilson wrote on the X platform.
“The UNM deemed the Congressman’s statement as unwavering support for Georgia’s territorial integrity,” the UNM said.
