“Thirty-five years on, we still fight for a better future for our country for the current government not to cede Georgia to an adversary country,” said the Chairman of the opposition United National Movement (UNM) party, Levan Khabeishvili remarking on Freedom March to be held in Tbilisi this evening.
“It is a significant day today. Georgians value unity very much. They know that nothing is impossible without unity, whoever is the rival,” he said, adding Georgians could achieve everything with unity.
Today, 35 years have passed since the April 9 tragedy in Tbilisi when the Soviet Army violently dispersed a peaceful, anti-Soviet demonstration in the centre of Tbilisi. The violence dispersal resulted in 21 civilian deaths and hundreds of injuries. April 9 is commemorated as the Day of National Unity.
