Unauthorized construction work at the Lamaria Monastery in the village of Ushguli, Mestia Municipality, has been halted following a warning issued by Georgia’s National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation.

According to the agency, the construction of monastic cells on the monastery grounds was suspended after it intervened over the unauthorized works.

The agency said it would keep the public informed of any further decisions regarding the case.

It noted that construction had been carried out without the required authorization and emphasized that, under Georgian legislation, any construction, rehabilitation, or other intervention involving a cultural heritage monument must receive prior approval from the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation and comply with the procedures established by law.
