UN Security Council member states make statements in support of Georgia
On the occasion of the 12th anniversary of the August war, UN Security Council member states are making statements in support of Georgia.
Following the closed session of the UN Security Council, a joint statement on Georgia was issued by Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway and Ireland. Later, statements in support of Georgia by the representatives of these 8 countries were published on the social network.
“Germany fully supports Georgia’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. Ambassador Sautter urges Russia to engage constructively in the Geneva International Discussions and adhere to the six point plan. It’s high time for Russia to fulfil its international obligations and implement ceasefire agreement of 2008. Russia must withdraw its troops from the Georgian territory ” – reads the statement released by German mission to EU.
“This week marks 12 years since the beginning of the conflict between Russia and Georgia. Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, USA, United Kingdom, Norway, Ireland regret that little progress has been made towards resolving the conflict and reaffirm their support to Georgia’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity” -the Franch mission to EU published this statement.
“We remain steadfast in our support for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Georgia and encourage all parties to redouble their efforts within the Geneva International Discussions’ – the UK representatives wrote.
“In a joint statement to mark 12 years since the conflict between Georgia and Russia, eight current and incoming UNSC members Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, the US, the UK, Norway and Ireland firmly support Georgia’s: independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders”, – read the statement issued by the Belgian delegation to the UN.
“This week marks 12 years since the Russian invasion of Georgia. We call again on Russia to fully implement her obligation and commitments under the Agreements of 12 August and 8 September 2008” – notes the statement by the Estonian representation in the UN.
In addition, Estonian representation publishes the statement by the Deputy Permanent Representative of Estonia to the UN, Gert Auvaart: ” Lately we witnessed the increase of provocative actions against Georgia. This translates into a more fragile security situation in the whole region. Therefore, we call on Russia to start immediately implementing the Secretary General’s call for a global ceasefire and to respect the international law.
On August 5, the situation in Georgia was discussed at a closed session of the UN Security Council. After the session, a joint statement on Georgia was issued by Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway and Ireland.
