UK approves Georgia’s request to extradite convicted person wanted for raping minor
The Tbilisi City Court fully upheld the evidence presented by the prosecution and found a defendant guilty of raping a minor, the Georgian Prosecutor General’s Office said.
“An investigation conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs established, through evidence presented by the prosecution during the court proceedings, that between 2006 and 2013, the convicted individual systematically raped his niece, who was under the age of 14, at a residential house in Tbilisi, knowingly taking advantage of the victim’s vulnerable condition.
The defendant had been evading the investigative authorities. He was charged in absentia under Article 137, Part 5 of the Criminal Code of Georgia — rape, namely sexual intercourse committed by taking advantage of the victim’s vulnerable condition against a person under the age of 14, under the version of the law in force until December 30, 2013.
Pre-trial detention was imposed as a measure of restraint, and the defendant was placed on the wanted list.
The Tbilisi City Court found the defendant fully guilty of the charges and sentenced him to 20 years in prison.
The convicted individual, who had been wanted by Georgian authorities, was detained by law enforcement officers in London on October 22, 2024.
The competent authorities of the United Kingdom granted the request of the Georgian Prosecutor General’s Office for the extradition of the wanted convicted individual to Georgia,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said.
