Two arrested in Tbilisi over group car theft

Two people, including one minor, have been arrested by officers of the Old Tbilisi Main Division of the Tbilisi Police Department on charges of stealing a vehicle by a group acting under a prior agreement, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said.

According to the ministry, the investigation established that the suspects unlawfully took possession of a vehicle belonging to a company in Tbilisi and were driving the stolen vehicle toward western Georgia.

“Shortly after committing the crime, they were involved in a traffic accident while driving the stolen vehicle. They abandoned the car at the scene and fled.

“As a result of operational and investigative measures, law enforcement officers arrested the suspects in the immediate aftermath of the crime. The stolen vehicle was recovered as evidence,” the ministry said.

The investigation is being conducted under Article 177 of the Criminal Code, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
