TV Company Formula issues statement on arrest of journalist Vakho Sanaia

“The host of Formula TV, journalist Vakho Sanaia, was arrested today by regime police, allegedly accused of participating in a protest under newly introduced repressive laws,” notes the statement released by the TV company Formula.

According to the broadcaster, Sanaia was arrested, allegedly on accusations of blocking a road during the demonstration.

The TV company said the detention constitutes direct pressure on both the journalist and independent media in Georgia.

“Amid a repressive environment and severe restrictions on civil rights, the suppression of media freedom has become even more evident. This is unfolding just days before October 20, when senior EU diplomats are expected to review the situation in Georgia, including the escalating pressure on the media.

Sanaia is the anchor of the prime-time news program and the weekly political analysis show Formula of the Week. He should be preparing for the broadcast.

We demand his immediate release and call on the international community to respond,” the TV company stated.
