President Donald Trump tweeted in both English and Farsi telling Iranians protesting Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that he stands behind them.
“To the brave and suffering Iranian people: I have stood with you since the beginning of my presidency and my government will continue to stand with you. We are following your protests closely. Your courage is inspiring,” Trump tweeted.
Protesters in Iran called upon Khamenei to step down after the country admitted to shooting down a Ukrainian Boeing 737 that contained dozens of Iranian citizens.
The Ukrainian Boeing 737 crashed two minutes after taking off from Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran, killing all passengers and crew.
