Traffic restricted near Holy Trinity Cathedral, pedestrian access via Meskhishvili Street
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, vehicle movement in the area surrounding the Holy Trinity Cathedral has been restricted due to the Public Funeral of the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia, Ilia II.
The agency states that traffic is prohibited from Avlabari Square toward Meskhishvili and Gonashvili streets in the direction of the Holy Trinity Cathedral; from Baratashvili Hill to Tsurtsumia Street; from Akhvlediani Street to Samreklo Street; from Saingilo Street to Gumbri Street; from Gorki and Bukhaidze streets to Samreklo Street; and from Tsurtsumia Street to Gurjaani Street. Movement is also restricted toward Meskhishvili and Gonashvili streets from Dmanisi, Vakhtang VI, Avlabari, Irbakhi, and Tsiskri streets.
As for pedestrians, they will be able to reach the Holy Trinity Cathedral from the Avlabari metro station via Meskhishvili Street and return via Gonashvili Street, the Ministry added.
The Patriarch was borne in procession from the Patriarchal Residence to the Holy Trinity Cathedral. The cathedral remains open 24 hours a day, allowing the public to pay their respects.
Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II passed away on March 17 at the age of 93. Catholicos-Patriarch is to be buried at Sioni Cathedral on March 22.
