Tbilisi will host several events today as the country marks the 77th anniversary of the Day of Victory over Fascism and the end of WWII.
On May 8, 1945, World War II ended following the declaration of Germany’s capitulation. May 9 was declared the day of victory over fascism. Georgia lost up to 300,000 soldiers in this war. To mark the occasion, veterans of WWII traditionally gather in Tbilisi’s Vake Park to commemorate and lay wreaths at the memorial of the Unknown Soldier, but due to renovation works there, veterans will meet up in the Veterans’ Park.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced that Georgian veterans of WWII will receive a one-time financial bonus of GEL 1,000, while the families of servicemen who died in WWII – GEL 500.
