Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office has charged three convicted inmates in connection with the physical assault of penitentiary facility employees.

An investigation conducted by the General Inspection of the Ministry of Justice established that on October 2, an inmate identified as B.Ch., who is serving a sentence for a particularly serious crime, physically assaulted the deputy director of Penitentiary Facility No. 6 when the official approached his cell to conduct an inspection.

On October 4, at the same facility, inmates identified as J.J., convicted of a particularly serious crime, and V.T., convicted of a serious crime, attacked and physically assaulted the chief inspector of the facility’s Legal Regime Department as they were returning from the exercise yard, the Prosecutor’s Office said.

B.Ch., who had previously assaulted a penitentiary employee, was charged under Article 378, paragraph 4(b), and paragraph 5 of Georgia’s Criminal Code for repeatedly assaulting a penitentiary employee while serving a sentence for a particularly serious crime.

J.J. and V.T. were charged under Article 378, paragraph 5, which concerns the physical assault of a penitentiary employee by a person convicted of a serious or particularly serious crime.

The offenses carry a prison sentence of up to 12 years, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
