Tbilisi Mayor announces major renovation of Rustaveli Avenue

“Several large and important infrastructure projects will be implemented this year, including the complete renovation of Rustaveli Avenue,” announced Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze at the municipality government meeting.

According to him, underground communications and infrastructure will be fully reorganized as the top priority in all major projects.

“As you know, we are planning a complete rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue. The road is worn out, and in poor condition, with frequent surface damage and road collapses, precisely because the underground infrastructure is in poor condition. We will probably start rehabilitation works in May and plan to complete the project by the end of summer,” stated Kakha Kaladze.

He said that Rustaveli Avenue will be completely transformed, with both the road surface and historical buildings being renovated.

“The avenue will undergo radical changes, featuring a new design that will be comfortable and, of course, adapted for people with disabilities. I am confident that the project will be charming and effective when completed. Certainly, we won’t stop there – we also plan to rehabilitate the existing buildings. Most of these buildings are cultural heritage monuments. The second phase will involve the rehabilitation of these monuments, which will be a multi-year project, as we want not only to restore the facades but reinforce and renovate the buildings on Rustaveli Avenue completely,” the Tbilisi Mayor stated.

According to him, the Rustaveli Avenue rehabilitation project will include the complete replacement of underground utility networks, installation of sidewalks, outdoor lighting networks, and underground waste collection bins. Additionally, the road will be paved with asphalt and public transport stops will be nestled.

Furthermore, the capital’s mayor noted that two more streets in the Vake district, Kakutsa Cholokashvili and Giorgi Tsereteli streets, will be fundamentally renovated by the end of summer. Also, according to Kaladze, two ongoing projects in Samgori district, the rehabilitation works of Gakhokidze and Emir Burjanadze streets, where substantial infrastructure work is also being conducted, will be completed by the end of spring.

Discussing ongoing projects, the mayor also highlighted the rehabilitation works near Laguna Vere at Heroes Square, where the road is being widened, and capital works are being carried out on the roadway.

As Kakha Kaladze announced, the ongoing slope reinforcement works along the road near the Kaklebi restaurant on Tskneti Highway in Vake district will be completed by the end of August, after which travel in this direction will become safe.

“Another crucial project will be completed this year. This is the construction of the tunnel connecting the University and Kavtaradze streets. We are working intensively to finish by the end of April,” noted the capital’s mayor.

According to him, this project will enable the redirection of vehicular traffic and the decongestion of junctions.
