The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed concern over the freezing of the bank accounts of seven Georgian non-governmental organizations.

“The increasing pressure on civil society organisations in Georgia is concerning, including the recent freezing of assets. This decision is yet another step in the wrong direction for democracy in Georgia. Sweden maintains its strong support for Georgia’s civil society,” the Ministry said in a statement.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia announced earlier that the accounts of several NGOs were frozen as part of an ongoing investigation. According to the agency, the case involves allegations of sabotage, attempted sabotage under aggravating circumstances, cooperation with foreign organizations in hostile activities, and mobilization of funds for actions directed against the constitutional order and national security.

The Prosecutor’s Office further stated that the investigation had established a coordinated effort to equip protest participants, who carried out violent actions against law enforcement officers, with special means, including funds allegedly provided by NGOs.
