“Following a series of complex investigative and operational-search measures within the framework of counter-terrorism efforts, the State Security Service of Georgia (SSG) has detained a foreign citizen wanted by Interpol at the request of a foreign country in the city of Rustavi,” the SSG reports.

The investigation revealed that the individual travelled to the Middle East in 2014 and joined the ranks of the Islamic State terrorist organization operating in the region.

According to the Counter-Terrorism Centre, the detainee possesses combat experience and is a highly skilled specialist in explosive devices. He was responsible for particularly significant activities within the terrorist organization.

During the search, various types of evidence and electronic devices containing critical information for the investigation were seized from the detainee’s dwelling.

The investigation is being conducted by the Counter-Terrorism Centre of the State Security Service, with the appropriate expertise,” the SSG statement concluded.
