Speaker says EU to decide on Georgia, rather than speaking about open doors

It is time to make a decision on Georgia, and the European Union should take a more serious look at its own role and enlargement policy, Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, told journalists after attending a session of Parliament Speakers of EU members and partner nations.

Papuashvili said Georgia’s participation in the conference alongside EU member states’ parliament chairs was crucial. He added that the session focused on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, allowing him to express Georgia’s solidarity with Ukraine once again.

Speaker believes that it’s not the time to talk about the open doors today, and Georgia should be granted EU candidate status.

“The European Union must take a more serious look at its own role in the South Caucasus region given the geopolitical situation. Now it is time to decide on Georgia rather than talk about open doors and progress. We need solutions that the Georgian people are waiting for. Georgia should stand in the same position as Moldova and Ukraine by the end of the year,” he stated.
