Speaker says ending occupation “our generation’s duty”

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said 102 years ago, Georgia fought to protect the country’s independence; the fight ended in the occupation, years passed, Georgia gained independence but occupation continues.

The Speaker commemorated Junkers, who died for the fight of Georgia’s independence in Kojori-Tabakhmela on February 25, 1921.

He said it is the duty of our generation, the government and society to end occupation, unify Georgi and ensure its freedom and independence. According to Papuashvili, Georgian territories remain occupied by Russia.

“It is the duty of our generation, the government and society to act so that the occupation ends, Georgia unifies and its freedom and independence are ensured especially at this difficult period when the world is in confusion with respect to security.

The challenges, which the Russian aggressive placed the international community in face with, should be responded to guarantee the principles of territorial unity and sovereignty,” Shalva Papuashvili said.

Today marks the 102nd anniversary of the Soviet Occupation of Independent Georgian Republic in 1921.

The Georgian parliament declared February 25 as Soviet Occupation Day.
