Speaker says American partners recommend disregarding Joe Wilson

“It is up to other countries to study matters concerning Georgia, just as we examine the interests that other countries have regarding Georgia,” said Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.

Shalva Papuashvili was asked about the National Defence Authorization Act passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, which includes amendments regarding Georgia initiated by Congressman Joe Wilson.

According to the Speaker, the U.S. will decide what to probe into, and it does not need Joe Wilson’s calls.

“It is up to the U.S. to decide what to study, and it is ridiculous that Joe Wilson thinks the Trump administration needs his call to examine the influence, in any corner of the world, of countries with which the U.S. competes.

We have friendly advice from American partners not to pay attention to Joe Wilson. Joe Wilson was at the OSCE recently, and the head of his delegation wouldn’t even let him back on the plane as he did inconceivable things. It is up to other countries to study matters concerning Georgia, just as we examine the interests that other countries have regarding Georgia.

We have two key objectives: to unify the country and improve the population’s well-being. We are open to any relationship that fosters this; no relationship that hinders it will be admitted.

As soon as we hear calls for issues that obstruct reunification, such as calls from Brussels for escalation with Russia, we will block them. We cannot jeopardize the restoration of our territorial integrity for the sake of Brussels. We cannot fall in line with their political agenda; Brussels cares little about Georgia’s future,” he said.
