Speaker: Russia's occupation of Georgian territories hinders restoration of relations

“There is only one barrier to restoring relations between Georgia and Russia, and that is Russia’s occupation of Georgian territories. Russia can very easily remove this barrier,” stated the Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili.

Papuashvili commented on the statement made by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin that Russia is ready to restore diplomatic relations with Georgia.

As Papuashvili noted, the instrument to remove this barrier is in Russia’s hands.

“As soon as we observe steps to remove this barrier, restoring relations will certainly be possible. Everyone is aware that the occupation of Georgian territories is the primary obstacle to reestablishing ties between Georgia and Russia. The power to eliminate this barrier lies solely with Russia. We are waiting for action in this regard. I cannot comment on other issues; the occupation of Georgian territories is the only factor impeding the normalization of relations, and its removal is entirely within Russia’s control,” stated Papuashvili.
