Speaker: Public trusts government and parliament because we act in people’s interests
“Unfortunately, what Brussels is occupied with today is propaganda. This is what we expose — moving toward a civilizational abyss when people think they can replace real work with propaganda,” Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said.
Papuashvili was asked about a European Commission study which found that Georgia ranks among the top 10 European countries in terms of trust in parliament, ahead of 23 EU and NATO member states, including Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Spain, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Belgium, Malta, Hungary, North Macedonia, Poland, Albania, Croatia, Romania, Slovakia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Greece and Slovenia.
According to Papuashvili, the fact that propaganda cannot replace real work is evident across EU member states, where trust in governments is declining.
“Look at Germany and France. Look at what is happening in the streets of France — this is precisely the result of the erosion of trust. Then look at the level of trust in government in other countries.
In Georgia, there is public trust in the authorities, the government and Parliament precisely because both Parliament and the government act in the interests of the people rather than serving interests driven by global trends, as many EU member states unfortunately do. This is exactly what causes trust to erode,” Papuashvili said.
