Speaker: President threatened NBG to deprive it of function if uncomfortable with regulations

[Georgian President] Salome Zourabichvili threatened the National Bank (NBG) that if the NBG President did not adjust regulations to the Georgian President’s wishes, she [President] would make the NBG Council nonfunctional,” said Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.

The Speaker went on to say that the NBG was under pressure, adding, Salome Zourabichvili was calling on the NBG President to step down.

“Unfortunately, what we saw from the President and her office regarding the National Bank anew reveals how much disrespect the President and her office show towards the Georgian people.

Further, the president’s representative today stated she would not nominate the NBG Board candidates to the Parliament until NBG issues regulations relevant to the President’s stand, which is direct blackmail against the National Bank,” Papuashvili asserted.
