Speaker: Peter Fischer has abandoned diplomacy to support most radical wing of Georgian opposition

“I think Peter Fischer has finally abandoned diplomacy and simply become a supporter of the most radical wing of the radical opposition,” Georgia’s Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili told journalists.

As Papuashvili noted, German Ambassador to Georgia Peter Fischer does not represent Germany.

“Elene Khoshtaria is not only a radical oppositionist but at the same time an extremist oppositionist who is distinguished by the fact that she shows no respect for democratic institutions, human rights, human dignity—nothing that could be included in a politician’s positive qualities. When we see that an ambassador went there, and then tried to justify his solidarity by claiming it was only sympathy and empathy—sympathy for what? For a person saying they will kill themselves if something doesn’t happen? Is this the European understanding of democracy? What empathy does he have for a person calling on the opposition to declare a boycott of elections? Is this his understanding of democracy?

The fact is that Mr. Fischer does not represent Germany. The German people are certainly not carriers of these values that Mr. Fischer is showing to the Georgian people. Regrettably, the special attitude that the Georgian people had toward Germany over the past 34 years of our independence is being so rudely undermined and damaged by this one person that I don’t know how much time it will take to correct this,” Shalva Papuashvili remarked.

German Ambassador Peter Fischer visited hunger strikers, Droa party leader Elene Khoshtaria and former Georgian Dream MP Gedevan Popkhadze, on Rustaveli Avenue.

The Ambassador wrote on X “It’s human empathy to reach out to politicians on hunger strike, Elene Khoshtaria and ex-Georgian Dream MP Gedevan Popkhadze. An atmosphere of “If you are not for us, you are an enemy” is promoted. This mentality is antithetical to democracy and will make “EU by 2030” an illusion.”
