Speaker mourns Eldar Shengelaia: His characters’ phrases became part of Georgian everyday speech
“I extend my deepest condolences following the passing of the brilliant Georgian filmmaker Eldar Shengelaia,” Shalva Papuashvili, Chairman of the Parliament, extended condolences over the death of the legendary Georgian film director Eldar Shengelaia via social media.
In a heartfelt message, Papuashvili highlighted that Shengelaia’s memorable characters and their iconic catchphrases have become an inseparable part of Georgian colloquial speech.
“I extend my deepest condolences following the passing of the brilliant Georgian filmmaker Eldar Shengelaia,” Papuashvili wrote.
“His cinematic masterpieces hold a distinguished place not only in Georgian history but also in the annals of world cinema. The characters he brought to life have captured the hearts of generations, and his catchphrases have become an integral part of everyday Georgian speech.
I offer my condolences to Mr. Eldar’s family, his relatives, and the Georgian society for this great loss. The legacy left by Mr. Eldar will forever remain in our hearts and in the history of Georgian art,” writes Shalva Papuashvili.
Eldar Shengelaia, a revered film director, passed away at the age of 92.
