Speaker: Instead of foreign actors showing readiness to publicize EU/U.S. funded projects, we see attack on Transparency Law aiming to hide funding

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shava Papuashvili stated that at today’s Legal Issues Committee session, “the President’s representatives did not have an answer to which articles of Transparency Law were inconsistent with the Constitution.”

Papuashvili noted that conversations with international actors also proved that when it comes to content, “there are no arguments against the legislation itself.”

“This anew showed how much of a disinformation storm we are dealing with against the Georgian population, with internal and external actors involved in it, and all means, from the media to politicians, are utilised to mislead the Georgian people.

Today they could present their arguments against the content but avoided doing so. It turned out that the president’s representative only had one mandate: stigmatise.

“It is unfortunate that instead of European or American actors saying that they are ready to publicize projects financed from the US and EU budgets, we see an attack on this law, and in fact, the main goal of stigmatizing this law is to keep part of the funding hidden,” Papuashvili added.

Earlier today, the Legal Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Georgia backed the override of the veto on the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence.
