Speaker: If decision merit-based, Georgia should have opened accession negotiations with EU

“Georgia’s progress is remarkable, underscoring that if the decision were merit-based, Georgia should have an open accession negotiations process with the EU,” said Georgian Parliament Speaker, Shalva Papuashvili.

The Speaker echoed the 2024 Atlas on Freedom and Prosperity Around the World, published by the Atlantic Council on June 7.

“Georgia is ranked above all EU candidate countries, 6 NATO member countries, and 2 EU member countries in the 2024 Freedom Index. This comprehensive index evaluates 164 countries on criteria such as civil liberties, political rights, judicial independence, fair elections, and public safety.

Georgia’s progress is remarkable, underscoring that if the decision were merit-based, Georgia should have an open accession negotiations process with the EU,” the Speaker wrote on the X Platform.

The Atlantic Council’s 2024 Atlas on Freedom and Prosperity Around the World analyzes the 2023 Freedom Index of 164 countries, including Georgia. Georgia is listed among the 45 best countries that are assigned Free status.
