Speaker hopes for positive decision on Georgia's EU candidate status
“The visit of representatives of the EU member states responsible for Eastern Partnership issues one day ahead of the opinion to be published by the European Commission is symbolic and significant,” said Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.
According to the Speaker, at the meeting with EU member states representatives, the sides spoke about Georgia’s expectations, cooperation within the Eastern Partnership, regional challenges and Georgia’s role in security strengthening.
“We all hope that the decision on Georgia will be positive and the Eastern Partnership formats will finally assist Georgia in pushing forward on the European integration path. Two countries of the Eastern Partnership already have candidate status. Georgia is in expectation, and there are other countries which have not yet applied for EU membership. This format is interesting to gain experience from others and share our experience,” he said.
Dirk Schubel heads the delegation of the officials of the European Union and several member countries for the Eastern Partnership that arrived in Georgia on November 6, including Gabriel Cremades, a representative of Spain, the European Council chair.
