Speaker: Georgia is no one’s vassal, not even EU’s; Georgians are not to be lectured on democracy
“Georgia is no one’s vassal state, including the European Union’s. If there is anything that irritates the Georgian people, given their historical experience, it is being looked down upon,” Georgia’s Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili told journalists.
According to Papuashvili, the EU ambassador, as well as other embassies, organisations and politicians, must cease their patronising attitude towards the Georgian people.
“No one here is a vassal. We shall not be lectured on democracy by certain European countries where, according to all ratings, Georgia surpasses them in various directions, nor shall we be taught the rule of law. Therefore, let them act in accordance with Georgian people’s legislation,” Shalva Papuashvili declared.
Moreover, as Papuashvili noted, it has emerged that European Union citizens’ money is funding an individual who calls for political assassination and speaks cynically and mockingly about the death of Levan Gachechiladze, one of Georgia’s most distinguished politicians in contemporary history.
“Here, we see certain parallels with what is happening in America today. From liberals, when they mock human death, we are dealing with people of precisely the same morals, the same character, in Georgia. It is a fact that they fund this person with European Union citizens’ money. Perhaps the EU ambassador didn’t know he was funding someone who calls for political assassination and mocks people’s deaths, but surely he has found out; it has been several days now.
The silence we see from Herczynski [Pawel Herczynski, EU Ambassador to Georgia] is probably worse than those statements. This is precisely the problem we have been discussing. On one hand, when good deeds are done with their funding, they take credit, take photographs, but when it emerges that their funded individuals call for political assassination, they fall silent and hide from Georgian society.
My wish is that, rather than Pawel Herczynski hiding from the Georgian people, he should address these questions. The question is simple: does he intend to continue funding, with European Union citizens’ money, the individual who calls for political assassination and mocks human death?” Shalva Papuashvili declared.
