Sending volunteers means direct involvement in military conflict, GD Chair says
“Sending volunteers to Ukraine by the country means direct involvement in the military conflict. We will not do that,” said Irakli Kobakhidze, Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party.
Kobakhidze denied knowing the details over sending a plane by the Ukrainian government and claimed that it was neither his responsibility nor the prerogative, whereas the government had to make a responsible decision.
Responding to the question of why Georgian volunteers could not go to Ukraine, while many countries have said that volunteers can go to Ukraine, Kobakhidze argued that any person could fly to Europe and arrive in Ukraine. According to him, when people from the EU member states go to Ukraine, the state does not take responsibility for it.
“This is done from Europe, but as for the organized sending of military force, it means the involvement of military force in the conflict. We can decide – should Georgia become part of an intense war? Do you think so? People who make provocation in Georgia every day want Georgia to be part of an intense war, we will not allow this, we are responsible for this before the country,” Kobakhidze said.
According to Georgian volunteers, on Monday evening, a flight chartered by the Ukrainian government to transport them to Ukraine was blocked from landing in Tbilisi.
