Senator Jeanne Shaheen says Georgian people want future with Europe

US Senator Jeanne Shaheen echoed the Russian visa waiver for Georgian citizens and its recent move to lift the ban on direct flights to Georgia.

The Senator said that the Georgian people wanted their future with Europe, aligned with democracy and not Russia, which kept 20% of Georgia’s territory invaded.

“The Georgian people want a future that aligns with democracy, Europe, and not a relationship with a country that unlawfully invaded and maintains control of 20% of their country. Georgian lawmakers should reconsider whether these actions reflect the wishes of their citizens,” she tweeted.

On May 10, Russia lifted a visa requirement for Georgians per a decree signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday. By another decree, President Putin cancelled the ban on direct flights of Russian airlines and the sale of tours to Georgia that had been in force since 2019.
