Security Police Department to take over protection of railway cargo and infrastructure

The authority to protect railway cargo, facilities, and infrastructure will be granted to the Security Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Aleksandre Darakhvelidze stated.

According to Darakhvelidze, the decision aims to ensure more effective protection of Georgia’s railway system, which is considered a strategic asset for the country.

He explained that under the current legislation, responsibility for railway security is assigned to the Transport Police, a structure that no longer exists, making legal regulation necessary.

“For our country, Georgian Railway is one of the strategic facilities. Accordingly, the cargo transported by rail and the infrastructure used by the railway require highly effective protection. A decision has been made that this protection will no longer be carried out by private security companies, but by the Security Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs,” Darakhvelidze said.

He added that amending the law is necessary to formally transfer this authority to the Security Police Department and bring the legislation in line with the existing institutional structure.
