Saakashvili claims to have historic responsibility for Georgia's reunification and greater Caucasus unity

“I can play a decisive role in Georgia’s reunification and the cause of greater Caucasian unity. I can do this because of my historical experience, because of my reputation,” Georgia’s former president Mikheil Saakashvili declared during today’s court proceedings via remote participation.

According to Saakashvili, Georgia’s salvation and great reconstruction period lie ahead.

“Let us not wait for decisions from various political actors. I, of course, accept my great historical responsibility. I know that I can play a decisive role in all of this – in Georgia’s reunification, the cause of greater Caucasian unity. I can do this because of my historical experience and my reputation, because I am in very close relations with almost all leaders of the region, and even with those I’m not – for example, Pashinyan too is implementing the reforms we carried out in our time, our anti-corruption reforms.

I feel that I can do this, but I can do this only together with the Georgian people and all political actors. I take this responsibility upon myself, but I realise that strength lies in unity, and no individual can accomplish this alone. But, of course, I will make every effort to move forward in this direction on time. A united Caucasus soon, and a united Georgia will also be the axis of this, and will be a geopolitical player of very great significance on a global scale.

Georgia was a major global player after the Rose Revolution. Then came counter-revolution with the help of our enemy; we were made to lose this status, but we will regain this through our friends, including through Ukrainians, where I have very great political weight, as you know – to this day, I am chairman of President Zelensky’s reform advisory council – also through Europeans and Americans,” Mikheil Saakashvili declared.

Moreover, Saakashvili declared that as soon as the situation changes in Georgia, the visa regime and property relations with Russia will be tightened.

“There comes a period of creating such a Georgia as we have never seen in our history. We will surpass even the heights of Aghmashenebeli and King Tamar, for this is a new era—marked by new circumstances and a deeply interconnected, globalised world—where our identity will be preserved and strengthened.

We will rid ourselves of colonial misfortune here. For example, today in Batumi, you can hardly hear Georgian spoken. Everything is in Russian. As soon as the situation changes in Georgia, the visa regime with Russia will be tightened, and property relations with Russia will be tightened. We do not intend for Georgia to be emptied of Georgians and for Chukchi, Moldovans, Bashkirs, Tatars, Muscovites and Petersburgers to settle in their place. Our country belongs to us,” Mikheil Saakashvili noted.
