Rockfall at Vardzia near Secret Tunnel damages footpath; section is temporarily closed for safety

A rockfall has been recorded at Vardzia near the so-called Secret Tunnel, causing damage to the footpath, the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation has reported.

The Agency also states that the affected section will be temporarily closed for safety reasons.

“On May 27 of this year, in the early hours of the morning, a rockfall was recorded in the visitor access area of the Vardzia Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve, near the so-called Secret Tunnel, causing damage to the footpath and the safety barrier.

In the interests of visitor safety, the affected section will be temporarily closed. Specialists are already on site assessing the current situation and planning the subsequent restoration works. Visitors are requested to follow the instructions of Museum-Reserve staff when moving about the site,” the statement reads.
